Bayern Munich rival Chelsea, Newcastle United in Gregor Kobel race

Bayern Munich are interested in signing Gregor Kobel in the summer, while challenging the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle United for the keeper.

According to Fichajes, Gregor Kobel is high on the agenda for Bayern Munich ahead of the summer. The Bavarians are seeking a long-term replacement for legendary keeper Manuel Neuer, while the Borussia Dortmund custodian has interested parties from the Premier League, with Chelsea and Newcastle United keen.

Gregor Kobel has long been one of Borussia Dortmund’s key performers, making over 200 appearances for the Bundesliga giants. He has been playing at a high level for many seasons now, and that has opened up speculation that it might be time for a change.

Unfortunately for Dortmund, key rivals Bayern Munich are once again angling for one of their main players. Vincent Kompany has reportedly approved the idea of signing Kobel as a long-term replacement for legendary keeper Manuel Neuer, with the Swiss star’s important experience in Germany key to their chase.

Bayern Munich are not overly keen to promote some of their stars hanging out behind Neuer in the pecking order and are keen to bring in proven quality. The idea of leaving Dortmund to join the Bavarians may not resonate well with the fans, but it could be an appealing prospect for Kobel from many angles.

Dortmund still hold a strong position in negotiations, considering they can still keep the 28-year-old Bundesliga goalkeeper for at least two more years. Hence, Bayern Munich could have to pay a premium fee for Kobel, although the bigger worry is the competition from Premier League sides.

Where next for Gregor Kobel?

Kobel not only has Bayern Munich’s attention, as Newcastle United and Chelsea are also considering a move for the 28-year-old Bundesliga goalkeeper. Chelsea are looking at a new shot-stopper as they are ready to upgrade on Robert Sanchez, with the likes of Sunderland’s Robin Roefs mentioned lately.

Newcastle United are still deciding on their goalkeeping lineup for next season, as on-loan star Aaron Ramsdale’s recent rise to the No. 1 spot could change the scenery for Nick Pope. Either way, the club are eager to sign another proven keeper for the team, although they could fall behind the other mentioned suitors in the race for Kobel.
