AS Roma eyeing Bart Verbruggen as Mile Svilar replacement

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

Bart Vebruggen has been exceptional for Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, and his exploits have helped him become a target for AS Roma, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

According to a report by Italian outlet AS Roma Live, the Serie A giants are now hoping to secure the Dutchman’s signature as a replacement for Mile Svilar amid uncertainties surrounding the incumbent’s long-term future.

Svilar has been excellent for AS Roma, and he has been linked with a summer exit. The Giallorossi will need to replace a key player like him properly, and it is no surprise that they are interested in the Brighton mainstay. Verbruggen has shown he has the potential to compete at the highest level, and with experience and guidance, he could develop into a top-class goalkeeper.

Bart Verbruggen stats compared to Vicario, Pope and Svilar (league)

  • Saves: 84 vs 83, 67, 92
  • Save percentage: 72.6 vs 63.4, 69.1, 77.3
  • Clean sheets: 7 vs 7, 7, 13
  • Penalty save percentage: 16.7% vs N/A

It remains to be seen whether AS Roma follow up on interest with an official offer sign the player. The Serie A top-four hopefils will have to compete against two Premier League clubs, and it could prove difficult for them.

Tottenham and Newcastle United certainly have more financial resources compared to the Italian club. However, AS Roma may be able to offer UEFA Champions League football next season, unlike the two Premier League clubs.

However, Bart Verbruggen is well settled in the Premier League, and he might prefer to continue in England. It remains to be seen whether AS Roma can convince the player to join.

Spurs and Newcastle United need Verbruggen

Meanwhile, Tottenham need an upgrade on Guglielmo Vicario and Antonin Kinsky. Both players have cost their team valuable points with error-prone displays. Tottenham must look to address that weakness during the summer transfer window if they want to fight for trophies next season.

A reliable goalkeeper could make a huge difference. They have not yet been able to fill the void left by Hugo Lloris. On the other hand, Newcastle United will need a long-term replacement for Nick Pope, who is in the twilight stages of his career.

Verbruggen could compete with Aaron Ramsdale for the starting spot. Competition for places will help both players improve, and it will help Newcastle progress as a team.
