Xavi Simons wants to join Barcelona

Xavi Simons reportedly wants to leave Tottenham for a return to Barcelona amid uncertainties over the north London club’s future.

According to Fichajes, Xavi Simons could push for a move to Barcelona in the summer, amid uncertainties at Tottenham. Signed from RB Leipzig last summer, the Dutch international star has been poor alongside most of his teammates, as a move back to his old team could prove appealing.

Tottenham are in a state of turmoil following another loss at the weekend, which took them closer than ever to the Premier League relegation zone. The loss to direct relegation rivals Nottingham Forest was a blow, as the odds on their chances of going down have increased significantly.

The prospect of relegation, and even due to the kind of season they have had, as well as the prospect of playing no Champions League football next season, will cost them their key stars. Many of the first-team regulars are already considering exits in the close season, including key defensive pairing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Xavi Simons also seems to be in a similar boat at the moment, amid Barcelona’s links with the Dutch international. The Tottenham summer signing was a player at the Catalan club at a young age, but never played a first-team game for the side, although he might be open to the idea of making a return to the Spanish giants.

The report states that Barcelona might be open to the prospect of paying around the €40 million mark, which, considering the €65 million that Spurs paid last summer, would be staggeringly low. Tottenham are not considering a loss on their investment and are protected by a contract with the player until 2030.

Can Barcelona Sign Xavi Simons?

Barcelona could look at the idea of signing Simons if the deal fits within their financial structure, as they may yet struggle to pay big in the market. The fact that Spurs might demand significantly more than what the report states could hamper any move from the Catalans, even if Simons is keen on making the move.

From a sporting angle, the move might seem unnecessary, considering Barcelona already have Dani Olmo as well as the highly-rated Fermín Lopez. The latter remains linked with Chelsea, and should they sell López, then a move for Simons would make total sense.
