Arsenal must fork out £35 million to land Rangers star Emmanuel Fernandez.
Arsenal’s recruitment under Mikel Arteta has often been built around patience, profile and long-term upside rather than simply chasing the biggest names on the market. That strategy has helped shape one of the strongest squads in England, and it appears the Gunners are once again looking for a defender who fits a very specific mould.
With the summer window beginning to take shape, attention is already turning toward players who could strengthen Arsenal’s depth and future-proof key positions. One name now beginning to gather serious traction is a towering centre-back north of the border who has quietly turned himself into one of the most closely watched defenders in Britain.
According to Teamtalk, Arsenal are among a growing list of clubs keeping tabs on Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a breakout campaign at Ibrox after arriving from Peterborough United last summer, and his rise has reportedly placed him firmly on the radar of several major sides.
Standing at 6ft 4in, Fernandez has built a reputation as a physically dominant defender who offers plenty in both boxes. He has impressed with his strength in duels, aerial authority and ability to pose a threat from set-piece situations, qualities that naturally appeal to clubs operating at the highest level.
Arsenal are said to have shown interest for some time, with scouts believed to have monitored him closely during the season. Chelsea have also been credited with admiration, while clubs from elsewhere in the Premier League and Europe are thought to be weighing up whether to make a move when the transfer market opens.
Rangers, however, are under no pressure to sell. Fernandez is contracted until 2029, which leaves the Scottish side in a commanding negotiating position as speculation around his future begins to intensify. That has led the Glasgow club to place a hefty £35 million valuation on the defender. It is an eye-catching figure for a player signed for around £3.5 million less than a year ago, but Rangers clearly believe they are sitting on one of the most valuable defensive assets in the Scottish Premiership.
If any club were to meet that price, Fernandez would become Rangers’ most expensive sale ever, surpassing the fee Ajax paid to sign Calvin Bassey in 2022. Clearly, they believe Fernandez is in a league of his own.
From Arsenal’s point of view, the interest makes sense as Fernandez fits the profile of a modern centre-back with physicality, upside and resale value, even if he would likely begin as a squad option rather than an immediate starter.
Arsenal’s interest remains, but £35 million feels steep for a player still proving himself at the highest level. Fernandez clearly has the tools to develop into a top defender, yet this looks like one of those deals where timing will be everything. If Rangers hold firm, Arsenal may admire from a distance unless they become convinced they are looking at the next major breakout centre-back.
