Serie A champions Napoli are still keen on signing 20-year-old English international Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
According to an update by Luca Marchetti, as relayed by Area Napoli, Kobbie Mainoo is the subject of interest from Napoli. The Serie A champions are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 20-year-old Manchester United whizkid has emerged as a target for the Partenopei.
The Italian giants have been keen on signing the Englishman for a long time, and they attempted to secure his services on loan in the winter transfer window. Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers mainstay Joao Gomes is an alternative to Mainoo if a deal does not materialise.
Has Kobbie Mainoo resurrected his situation at Manchester United?
Kobbie Mainoo has been one of the world’s most promising young midfielders since breaking into the first-team squad at Manchester United. However, the 20-year-old has gone from being a regular under Erik ten Hag to a backup option for Ruben Amorim to a regular under Michael Carrick, having been in and out of the starting lineup in the last 12 months.
The English midfield prospect has made nearly 100 appearances for Manchester United thus far while chipping in with seven goals and five assists. Meanwhile, despite the highs and lows, Mainoo’s stock remains high. Napoli will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Serie A adventure beckons?
Napoli wanted to sign Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United last summer, but the deal failed to materialise. The continued interest makes sense, as Antonio Conte wants more options in the middle of the park to sustain a challenge on all fronts, even though he has a stacked midfield unit at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
However, with Kevin De Bruyne struggling with fitness issues this season, Billy Gilmour requiring surgery, and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa facing an uncertain future, the Serie A champions need a new midfielder. So, Mainoo remains on Napoli’s wishlist, with the Partenopei attempting to secure the 20-year-old Englishman’s services this summer.
However, a summer move may not materialise, as Manchester United will attempt to tie Mainoo to a new contract in the coming months. That may not deter Napoli, although the Serie A champions have other midfielders, including Joao Gomes, on their wishlist.
