Atletico Madrid could plan a €50 million raid on Tottenham for skipper and key defender Cristian Romero ahead of the summer.
According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are seriously considering a €50 million move for Cristian Romero in the summer. The Argentine defender’s future is on uncertain terms following the plight of Tottenham at the current moment, as relegation looms large over the North London side, which could lead to an exodus, including the exit of the Argentine World Cup winner.
Tottenham are in a terrible state following a string of abysmal results both in the Premier League and Champions League. The North Londoners are in the thick of a relegation battle, while they have one foot out the door in the Champions League following a thorough thrashing at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
The real threat of relegation brings new problems with regard to future finances and the prospect of losing a host of their current first-team stars. Skipper Cristian Romero could be one of the first out of the door should they go down, with Atletico Madrid reportedly interested in the Argentine as well as his teammate Pedro Porro.
The interest from Diego Simeone dates back to last summer, when they were rumoured to make an offer before the Spurs man committed his future to the club. However, with the latest developments around Tottenham, there is another chance to sign the World Cup winner.
Atletico Madrid are reportedly preparing a €50 million offer for the Spurs captain, and given the circumstances this time around, such a proposal might seem sufficient. Tottenham might be ready to sell Romero in the summer, and they could revamp their squad with a host of outgoings and incomings in the close season.
Atletico Madrid to sign Cristian Romero?
Atletico Madrid are seen as the likeliest destination for Romero should he leave Tottenham, especially if the club suffer relegation. However, there could be other clubs in the mix for the Argentine defender, with the 27-year-old mainstay still considered one of the top defenders in the game.
The report states Atletico Madrid were impressed by Romero’s performances against them in the Champions League, but that may seem a bit far-fetched, considering this Tottenham defence conceded five times. However, that game aside, a move could be possible, especially if the North Londoners go down at the end of the season.
