Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 28-year-old Swiss international Gregor Kobel from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.
According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, Gregor Kobel is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. So, the 28-year-old Borussia Dortmund shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.
Interestingly, Bart Verbruggen is the top goalkeeping target for Newcastle United. However, if the Dutchman “becomes too costly” this summer, the 2024/25 EFL Cup winners must identify an alternative, with Kobel next on their wishlist.
How has Gregor Kobel fared at Borussia Dortmund?
Gregor Kobel has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga since joining Borussia Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart in July 2021. The Zurich-born stopper has made significant progress in the last four and a half years, becoming a mainstay for the Black and Yellows.
The 28-year-old has made over 200 appearances for Borussia Dortmund thus far while keeping 68 clean sheets and conceding 267 goals. Meanwhile, Kobel’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. Premier League clubs, in particular, have been keen on signing the Swiss international, with Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Gregor Kobel has been on Newcastle United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as Nick Pope is on the wrong side of 30. Additionally, the experienced English shot-stopper has been error-prone in the 2025/26 season, showing signs of regression after a few injury-riddled campaigns.
Meanwhile, it is unclear if Aaron Ramsdale will complete a permanent move to Newcastle United in the summer transfer window. Several candidates, including James Trafford, have thus emerged on the Tyneside club’s wishlist, with Kobel also a viable target. Interestingly, Newcastle United’s top goalkeeping target is Bart Verbruggen.
However, if the Dutch shot-stopper “becomes too costly” this summer, the Magpies will prioritise signing Kobel from Borussia Dortmund. So, it will be interesting to see if the 28-year-old Swiss international arrives at St. James’ Park in the summer transfer window if he becomes the top goalkeeping target for Newcastle United in the coming months.
