Newcastle United eyeing Darwin Nunez swoop

Newcastle United could explore the idea of bringing Darwin Nunez back to the Premier League, with Al-Hilal ready to part ways with the Uruguayan.

According to Fichajes, Newcastle United could explore the idea of signing Darwin Nunez in the summer. The Uruguayan striker has been in a decent vein of form, but league rules in Saudi Arabia could marginalise his usage for Al-Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League giants reportedly open to parting ways with the former Liverpool man.

Liverpool chased Alexander Isak with vigour during the summer and managed to land the Swedish striker on the final day of the summer window. Newcastle United used the funds from the sale to purchase Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, but they might be in the market for a new striker ahead of the summer.

Darwin Nunez, who made way for Isak’s arrival at Liverpool after sealing a lucrative move to Al-Hilal, is Newcastle United’s reported target. With 9 goals and 5 assists for Al-Hilal in all competitions this season, the Saudi club values him at around €35 million.

Newcastle United are reportedly considering the idea of bringing the in-demand 26-year-old former Premier League striker back to England. He has the profile that would suit Eddie Howe’s system, with the Magpies likely to consider investing in the attacker.

Should he arrive at St James’ Park, there might be a need to make space in the striker department, as Woltemade is already linked with an exit. William Osula is also expected to leave, while Wissa has not shone yet, which makes for an uncertain future for all three strikers.

Al-Hilal to sell Darwin Nunez?

League rules in Saudi Arabia have the potential to marginalise Al-Hilal’s use of Nunez moving forward. The surprise late arrival of Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad has since seen the club de-register Nunez from their league squad, owing to the limit placed on the number of foreign players in one team. Hence, Al-Hilal are open to parting ways, as they have invested huge sums in signing Benzema.

Should Nunez consider a move back to England, probably with Newcastle United, then he must take a significant pay cut from his lucrative salary at Al-Hilal. That might be the sacrifice needed to seal a return to the English top flight, as Al-Hilal might prefer a permanent sale over a loan deal of any sort.
