Bayern Munich rule out summer move for Cody Gakpo

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo is unlikely to move to Bayern Munich following turbulent Anfield campaign.

Bayern Munich have effectively ended speculation linking them with Cody Gakpo this summer, with the club satisfied that last year’s recruitment call has already solved their left-wing dilemma.

Twelve months ago, Bayern Munich were weighing up options to strengthen the left side of their attack. Gakpo was among the names under serious consideration as part of a shortlist that also included his former Anfield teammate. Ultimately, the German champions opted for a different profile, and that decision has shaped their current stance.

With their preferred signing delivering immediate impact, Bayern see no need to revisit the market for another high-profile left winger. The pathway that once looked open for Gakpo has quietly narrowed.

Gakpo’s mixed season at Anfield

Liverpool have endured an inconsistent campaign, and Gakpo’s numbers reflect that broader dip. 11 goal contributions in 34 appearances across competitions tell the story of a player searching for rhythm in a side that has struggled to replicate last season’s intensity.

There is little doubt about Gakpo’s technical quality or tactical versatility. He can operate centrally, off the left, or even drift into hybrid roles depending on the system. However, form and timing matter in the transfer market. With Bayern’s current structure settled, the Dutchman’s situation does not present the urgency it once might have.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool themselves are not in a rush to sanction departures in that area of the pitch. Squad depth remains a consideration, and Gakpo still offers valuable flexibility across the front line.

Luis Diaz’s impact changes the equation

The key factor behind Bayern Munich’s decision is simple, because of performance. Luis Diaz has flourished in Germany, producing 19 goals and 12 assists in 32 appearances. A recent hat-trick against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim underlined his influence as Bayern maintain a six-point cushion over Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga title race.

Under Vincent Kompany, Diaz has cemented himself as a cornerstone of the attacking unit. His directness, work rate and end product have removed any lingering debate over whether Bayern chose correctly last summer.

Given that context, revisiting Gakpo would not only be unnecessary but potentially disruptive. While Bayern may still admire the Dutch attacker’s profile, admiration does not equal priority, especially when a position is already locked down by a proven performer.

From a strategic perspective, Bayern’s stance makes sense. When a signing delivers immediate returns and fits the manager’s system, doubling down in the same position can create imbalance. Stability often wins titles, not constant reshuffling.

For Gakpo, this may also be a blessing in disguise. A move to Munich would likely have meant competing for limited minutes in a role already dominated by Diaz. Instead, he now faces a crucial summer at Liverpool, one that could define whether he re-establishes himself as a key figure or becomes part of a broader rebuild.

In truth, this feels less like a rejection and more like a matter of timing. Bayern made their choice last year, and for now, it appears they chose well.
