Arsenal ahead of Tottenham in Leon Goretzka chase

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Leon Goretzka ahead of rivals Tottenham, with UEFA Champions League football key to the equation.

According to Football Insider, Arsenal could be leading the race to sign Leon Goretzka ahead of the summer. Tottenham are also in the mix as per the report, but the availability of Champions League football at the Emirates could be key to the operation, as the 67-cap German international is set to leave Bayern Munich on a Bosman deal.

Leon Goretzka is expected to be one of the sought-after free agents in the summer when he departs Bayern Munich once his contract expires. The Bavarians have already confirmed his exit once the campaign ends, with teams from many countries are showing an interest.

It is understood that the 67-cap German international might not oppose a switch to the Premier League while he can still offer top-level performances. Tottenham were keen ahead of January, but had no chance of signing him then, lthough they could approach the midfielder in the summer.

Arsenal reportedly enquired about Goretzka during January, but it was reported that the midfielder wanted to finish the campaign with Bayern Munich. The Gunners are still interested, but face competition from their local rivals, Tottenham.

Spurs are eager to bring in experienced heads to their side to drastically improve the quality of the team in the near future. A player like the Bayern Munich star would be a solid addition to the squad, but they face the challenge of luring him without the possibility of Champions League football next season.

Champions League football key to Goretzka move?

Arsenal are thought to be in the lead in the Leon Goretzka race, which the report explains could be due to the offer of Champions League football. The Gunners are currently leading the Premier League table and are widely expected to win it, while qualifying for the Champions League by extension.

Arsenal could make a compelling pitch for the German international with a competitive squad ready to challenge for all major honours in the next few seasons. Goretzka might still have to fight for a place in Mikel Arteta’s midfield, as the Gunners probably represent the best sporting choice for the player, although he could have better financial offers from elsewhere, notably with Saudi and Turkish sides also keen.
