Leeds United, Newcastle United vying for Lorenzo Pellegrini

Leeds United and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 29-year-old AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, Lorenzo Pellegrini is the subject of interest from Leeds United. The Whites are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 29-year-old former AS Roma captain has emerged as a target for the West Yorkshire outfit.

However, the 2024/25 EFL Championship winners are not alone in the battle for Pellegrini’s signature, with Newcastle United also vying for his signature. Recent reports have also claimed that the Rome native is open to joining the Tyneside outfit, leaving Leeds United in a spot of bother.

Lorenzo Pellegrini at a crossroads

Lorenzo Pellegrini has reached a crossroads in his career after entering the final six months of his contract with AS Roma. While the 29-year-old has forced his way into Gian Piero Gasperini’s plans even after losing the club captaincy ahead of the 2025/26 season, his long-term future remains uncertain.

While Pellegrini has not been an undisputed first-choice starter, he has managed 1,300 minutes of game time in 23 outings thus far in the 2025/26 season. However, the Italian midfielder’s contract situation has alerted several well-known clubs. Premier League clubs, in particular, have been keen on signing him, with Leeds United and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Leeds United’s interest in Lorenzo Pellegrini makes sense. While the Whites reinforced their midfield unit by signing Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff last summer, Daniel Farke wants an attacking midfielder who can link the midfield with the attack. So, Pellegrini has emerged as a viable target, and convincing the former AS Roma captain to move to the Premier League may not be a tall order due to his contract situation.

As for Newcastle United, the Magpies hold a long-standing interest in Pellegrini. The continued eagerness to sign him is understandable, as Joe Willock and Joelinton face an uncertain future at St. James’ Park. Additionally, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are hot properties in the market. So, Pellegrini is a viable target for Newcastle United.

With the 29-year-old Italian international entering the final six months of his contract, a Bosman move to the Premier League may be on the cards. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Pellegrini.
