Tottenham Hotspur interested in Aitor Paredes

Tottenham are reportedly interested in a move for Aitor Paredes ahead of next summer to strengthen their defensive ranks.

According to Fichajes, Athletic Club star Aitor Paredes is on the radars of Tottenham ahead of next summer. The north Londoners are angling moves to strengthen their back line amid concerns over the futures of key centre-backs, with the Basque defender likely to cost in the region of €40 million.

Tottenham could be faced with the dilemma of keeping hold of their key defenders ahead of next summer. Despite skipper Cristian Romero signing on a new deal, there are considerable doubts heading into the summer following some tensions in the background.

Romero could depart the club amid Real Madrid’s ongoing interest, while there are doubts over Micky van de Ven’s future too. The Dutchman has widespread interest as he could leave if the club fails to make the Champions League places.

Hence, Spurs are planning for the future, possibly without at least one of Romero or Van de Ven. Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo was linked recently, while they have sights on other targets, such as Athletic Club’s Aitor Paredes, as a potential option.

Sticking with the Paredes links, Athletic Club will make it difficult for suitors to get their hands on one of their homegrown players and will demand his €40 million release clause. Spurs are in a good position to pay what is necessary, although convincing the Basque defender would be another task altogether.

Tottemham to pursue Aitor Paredes?

Tottenham are likely to take a closer look at Paredes and the profile he brings to the table. There will be evaluations over his suitability to their system, although convincing the player to take a secondary role should Van de Ven or Romero stay put will prove difficult.

On the financial aspect, Spurs are likely to consider paying what is necessary for the €40 million-rated centre-back, as they are looking to invest in the future. At 25, Paredes offers a long-term option for the club and the idea to keep building their defensive line for the future. At the moment, there are mere links to the Spaniard, which could intensify as the summer window edges closer and the futures of their existing stars become clearer.
