Liverpool handed blow in pursuit of Dayot Upamecano

Liverpool are set to miss out on defensive target Dayot Upamecano, with the France international set to sign a new deal at Bayern Munich.

According to CF Bayern Insider, Dayot Upamecano will not sign for Liverpool or any other suitor ahead of the summer, with the defender now set to commit his future to Bayern Munich. The defender was heading towards free agency, as Liverpool are set to suffer a blow by the centre-back’s decision.

Dayot Upamecano was headed towards leaving Bayern Munich as a free agent in the summer, as suitors lined up with offers. The French defender is one of the sought-after stars in his position at the back, with a host of top teams showing big interest, especially over the prospect of signing him on a free transfer.

Upamecano was linked with Liverpool very recently, with the Premier League champions on the lookout for a new defender to potentially replace Ibrahima Konate. The latter is also heading towards free agency ahead of the summer, as the latest reports have stated Konate has rejected a contract offer from the Merseysiders.

There’s a real chance Konate leaves, which would see Liverpool sign a high-profile replacement, as they were keen to bring in Upamecano. Marc Guehi was a target for the summer, but the England international chose to join Manchester City in January, and now, Liverpool have suffered a bitter blow in the Upamecano pursuit.

As per the report, Upamecano has agreed to sign a new deal with Bayern Munich, ending months of speculation over his future. The German champions have agreed to pay a hefty salary and a signing-on fee, as, despite the danger of leaving previously, the 27-year-old French international has chosen to commit his future to the Bavarians.

Liverpool to sign a new defender in the summer?

Liverpool agreed a deal for Jeremy Jacquet for the summer, which some might interpret as a possible replacement for Konate. However, given how thin they are at the back, the Frenchman may not prove enough, as they may have to bring in a high-profile name to maintain a level of competitiveness.

Having lost the chance to sign Upamecano, the Merseysiders will continue to look for alternatives to the 27-year-old French international. Moreover, they are also interested in a left-sided centre-back with the likes of Nico Schlotterbeck among those linked with a move ahead of the summer.
