Arsenal make approach over late move for Leon Goretzka

Arsenal have reportedly enquired about the signing of Leon Goretzka as a late signing following Mikel Merino’s injury.

According to talkSPORT, Leon Goretzka has emerged as a target for Arsenal in the eleventh hour of deadline day. The 30-year-old Bayern Munich star is available on a free transfer in the summer, with the Gunners enquiring to bring him on deadline day.

Arsenal were rocked by a serious foot injury to Mikel Merino, with Mikel Arteta hinting the midfielder could miss the remainder of the season. The loss of the Spaniard will come as a blow to the Gunners and their chances across all fronts, and the Spanish tactician insisted they will be on the alert if a market opportunity comes about.

Earlier in the day, there were big rumours of an enquiry for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, although those rumours have been brushed aside. Now, they are linked with an eleventh-hour move for Leon Goretzka, as the Gunners have reportedly enquired about the 30-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder.

Goretzka is out of contract in the summer, with suggestions that he could leave then for a new challenge. The German international could be a shrewd addition, not for the long term but to replace Merino temporarily.

With his presence, Arteta can have the additional midfielder he has in Merino and not make unnecessary adjustments to his side in light of the Spaniard’s absence. The Gunners have enquired about the German international heading into the final hours of the window, but a deal might seem unlikely.

No Leon Goretzka move to Arsenal?

On paper, the idea of signing Goretzka might make a lot of sense, with the midfielder likely to bring in big experience from his immense time at Bayern Munich. However, considering the time remaining in the window and the fact that Bayern Munich still sees him as a key part of their squad, a move might seem unlikely.

Goretzka might continue the remainder of the season with the Bavarians and possibly move out at the end of the season on a Bosman deal. As for Arsenal, they are unlikely to make any late signings, which points towards Arteta finishing the season with his existing options, although the Gunners have a strong squad to see out the campaign on all fronts.
