Arne Slot’s Liverpool have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Tottenham defensive mainstay Micky van de Ven.
Micky van de Ven’s future has become a big talking point amidst Tottenham’s continued struggle in the Premier League. The Dutch centre-back could push for a move away if their form doesn’t improve before the end of the season. According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Tottenham will be forced to sanction Van de Ven’s departure if things continue in a similar fashion.
After making a name for himself at Wolfsburg, the 24-year-old defender made the move to the North London club in the summer of 2023. He has been one of the standout performers for them at the back over the last 2 and a half years.
While Spurs have been very inconsistent this term, Van de Ven has still stood out with his performances. He has been involved in a total of 30 matches and has contributed towards eight goals.
His contract at the North London club runs until the summer of 2029, but it seems he is not pleased with the direction their project is heading. If Spurs’ woes continue over the next few months, Van de Ven could actually end up pushing for a move away from the North London club. Spurs will find it difficult to stand in his way.
Van de Ven could leave Spurs
Liverpool have emerged as a potential destination. The Reds are believed to be massive admirers of the 24-year-old and would love to have him on their squad. With Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain, the Merseyside club consider the Spurs defender an ideal replacement.
While speaking about the Dutch defender’s future, O’Rourke said, “If Tottenham aren’t playing Champions League football next season maybe van de Ven could eye a move away to play at the highest level.
“A player like him will want to playing in the Champions League on a regular basis and be competing for silverware as well.
“It’s not going to be an easy deal to do. I’m sure there’ll be a lot of clubs, not just Liverpool, who would be interested in Van de Ven if there’s any indication that he wants to leave Tottenham anytime soon as well.
“He’s under a long-term contract until 2029 and we know Spurs are tough negotiators, so they’ll be looking at a big, big fee for Van de Ven as well.
“But as I said, if Tottenham aren’t showing improvements on the field, maybe that might see the player himself try and push for a move away.“
Securing Champions League football for next season could go a long way in them keeping hold of Van de Ven. However, failure could result in his trying to force an exit. Since they are 14th on the table, securing European football via league looks very difficult and winning the competition won’t be easy either.
As a result, the Dutch centre-back’s future is one to keep an eye on. The player’s stance certainly boosts Liverpool’s chances of securing his services. Even if the player ends up pushing for a move away, Spurs will certainly play hardball and look to raise a massive fee for someone whose contract runs until 2029.
