Tottenham have set an eye-watering £100 million price tag on star defender Micky van de Ven to deter suitors like Liverpool and Manchester United.
According to Team Talk, Tottenham are ready to ward off suitors for Micky van de Ven by slapping an eye-watering £100 million price tag on their star defender. Spurs remain intent on keeping the Dutch international with talks over a new deal ongoing for some time now.
Tottenham secured a big renewal for Cristian Romero last summer and had been hoping for the same with his defensive partner, Micky van de Ven. There are plenty of challenges ahead for Spurs to get a renewal for the 24-year-old speedster in place, amid growing interest in his signature.
Tottenham had been in talks with his camp since the summer over a new deal, and while these things take a lot of time, they are ready to accelerate discussions amid growing interest. Spurs could effectively allow Van de Ven to double his money to make him one of the highest earners, in a similar bracket to Romero or recent arrival Conor Gallagher.
However, the other big challenge for Tottenham is to ward off suitors, and they have now slapped an eye-watering £100 million price tag on Can de Ven. Such a price point is designed to deter suitors from his chase, such as Liverpool and Manchester United.
Liverpool had been planning on signing a left-sided centre-back for some time now, and remains interested in bringing Van de Ven. However, the price point might serve as a big factor in them looking at other targets, with the likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck also firm targets for the Reds.
Manchester United to pay Van de Ven price?
Manchester United currently holds the world record for the most expensive central defensive signing in the form of Harry Maguire. Should any club end up matching the £100 million demand from Spurs for Van de Ven, they would effectively break that record, as the Red Devils would incidentally want the Dutchman to replace Maguire.
The Red Devils are indeed planning for a big defensive signing in the summer, but the price tag slapped on Van de Ven may deter their chase. For now, Tottenham will hope the eye-watering price point for the 24-year-old speedster may prove enough for them to keep hold of the defender, as they are seriously hoping to agree on a new deal with the mainstay.
