Josh Sargent turns down Leeds United, Sunderland in favour of Toronto FC switch

Sunderland and Leeds United have been dealt a blow in the pursuit of Josh Sargent, with the striker keen on a switch to Toronto FC.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Josh Sargent has set his heart on a switch to MLS and wants to join Toronto FC. The Norwich City star’s decision comes as a big surprise given the high-profile interest from the likes of Leeds United and Sunderland, but he has made the call based on his family.

MLS could be on he verge of getting their hands on one of the top strikers in the Championship, as Josh Sargent could be on his way to Toronto FC. The Norwich City star has been in a decent vein of form this season, contributing to 11 goals for the Canaries across all competitions this season.

The 25-year-old has had his fitness issues during his spell in England, and while he has been largely sharp this term, the future of the player is far from Norwich City at the moment. In fact, the USMNT international is angling to make a return to the other side of the Atlantic and back to MLS.

Josh Sargent has decided to join Toronto FC in the MLS for family reasons, and that will have come as a blow to some of his suitors. Interestingly, the American striker has attracted plenty of attention with Sunderland and Leeds United among those keen.

West Ham were also showing initial interest in Sargent at the start of the January transfer window, but they have since moved on to other targets. Leeds United had an interest back in the summer when Patrick Bamford departed the club, and maintained their admiration ahead of the January window, but the USMNT star’s decision to join Toronto FC will have come as a blow for the Elland Road outfit.

Sunderland to sign a new striker?

Sunderland also held an interest in Sargent as Regis Le Bris wanted a new striker to bolster his attacking ranks ahead of the second part of the season. The decision from the USMNT star will have come as a surprise from Sunderland’s perspective, given he could have played an important role in their season.

Sunderland are angling to finish in the top four or in a European place at the very least at the end of the season. As they have now missed out on Josh Sargent, Le Bris might target a new option before the January transfer window deadline.
