West Ham United wanted to sign 33-year-old German international Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona in the winter transfer window.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the winter transfer window. So, the 33-year-old Barcelona shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the East London outfit.
However, while West Ham initiated the move to sign the veteran goalkeeper in the ongoing transfer window, they have “fallen short” in their attempts to convince him to move to the London Stadium. Instead, ter Stegen is closing in on joining Girona on loan from Barcelona until the end of the 2025/26 season.
What is Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s situation?
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has reached a crossroads in his career midway through the 2025/26 season. The veteran goalkeeper has been a polarising figure throughout his spell with Barcelona, having endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining the Blaugrana from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth €12 million in July 2014.
The 33-year-old has made over 400 appearances for Barcelona thus far while keeping 176 clean sheets and conceding 416 goals. However, the German international faces an uncertain future, as Joan Garcia has become Barcelona’s first-choice shot-stopper this term. Meanwhile, his stock remains high, with West Ham United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the winter transfer window.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Recent reports have linked Marc-Andre ter Stegen with several Premier League clubs. However, West Ham United’s interest in the Barcelona captain is understandable. While Nuno Espirito Santo has three goalkeepers in his squad, Lukasz Fabianski has struggled with a lower back injury in recent months.
Additionally, Mads Hermansen’s long-term future is uncertain despite his eagerness to fight for his place, as he has managed only one appearance for West Ham under Nuno Espirito Santo. So, the Hammers are scouring the market for a goalkeeper this month, with ter Stegen emerging as a viable target.
However, a January deal will not materialise, as the 33-year-old German international is closing in on joining Girona on loan from Barcelona until the end of the 2025/26 season. Other goalkeepers, including Filip Jorgensen, are also on West Ham’s wishlist, and it will be interesting to see if they sign a shot-stopper in the winter transfer window.
