Manchester United competing with Atletico Madrid in Joao Gomes chase

Atletico Madrid have entered the race for Joao Gomes and are ready to rival Manchester United for the Wolves midfielder’s signature.

According to ESPN Brasil via Sport Witness, Atletico Madrid are angling for a move for Joao Gomes this month as a replacement for Conor Gallagher. The Spanish side are ready to rival the likes of Manchester United in the race for the midfielder, although Wolves are yet to make their stance on a transfer clear.

Wolves are in a precarious position in the Premier League and widely considered favourites to get relegated at the end of the term. Having endured such a tiring time this term, there’s a chance they could consider selling some of their key players, especially the likes of Joao Gomes, right now rather than see his value diminish in the summer.

They were somewhat reluctant to lose him in January, but things have worsened since, and now the club might take a different stance. As for the 24-year-old South American, he is relaxed about his future and might even prefer to move in the summer in the right way rather than rush to join another team.

Manchester United were expected to chase Gomes in January, and there are doubts about whether they are willing to make an offer this month. The Red Devils are also not rushing into making midfield signings this month, and would prefer to assess their options in the summer as they are expected to revamp the midfield zone then.

While they have had an interest in Gomes, there’s an element of pressure to sign him now owing to competition for the 24-year-old South American. Crystal Palace were interested in the Wolves star, and now Atletico Madrid have entered the race.

Atletico Madrid to sign Joao Gomes?

Conor Gallagher has signed for Tottenham this month, as Atletico Madrid are reportedly looking at Gomes as a potential replacement. The report states a figure of €40 million would be required to tempt Wolves into a sale, although it will be interesting to see whether the Spanish side are willing to fork out as much.

The report also states that Napoli were inching closer to the 24-year-old South American; however, he prefers to stay at Wolves and continue his career in the Premier League. That alone could give Manchester United a boost, although should Atletico Madrid make an offer, things could certainly change.
