Aston Villa closing in signing Conor Gallagher as Tottenham step up interest

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are closing in on the signature of Tottenham Hotspur midfield target Conor Gallagher.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are on the verge of reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid to bring Conor Gallagher back to the Premier League. Unai Emery’s team are desperate to add him to their squad and are doing everything in their power to get the green light from the Spanish club.

While they are within touching distance of agreeing a deal with Atletico, as negotiations are beleived to be in the final stages, they are yet to agree personal terms with the player. They continue to hold talks with Gallagher’s camp, as they look to get a deal over the line in the coming days.

Villa are not the only club that are keen on his signature. According to a report from football.london, Tottenham are also after his services and have stepped up their efforts to sign the former Chelsea midfielder. They have a long-standing interest in the English international and have opened informal talks over the weekend.

Tottenham trying to beat Villa to Gallagher’s signature

Spurs were keen on signing him before he made a £33 million move to Atletico back in the summer of 2024. While they couldn’t strike a deal back then, the North London club have retained interest in him. They have revived their interest in him and are looking to land him in the ongoing transfer window.

Rodrigo Bentancur has picked up a serious hamstring injury, which will sideline him for three months. As a result, reinforcing the midfield is a top priority for the club, and Gallagher could certainly help their cause. Given the amount of experience he has in the English top flight, it won’t take him long to adjust to life at Tottenham.

However, Spurs are not the front-runners at this stage. Villa certainly have the advantage as they have been in talks with Atletico for weeks and are on the verge of reaching an agreement with the Spanish club. Negotiations are in the final stages regarding a loan deal with a buy option, which could become an obligation depending on certain conditions.

Since they are yet to get the green light from the player’s end, Spurs still have a chance of hijacking the deal. Meanwhile, Gallagher would certainly be open to a move, as he is not a regular starter under Diego Simeone’s team. A return to the Premier League could actually bolster his chances of securing a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup.
