Championship outfit Ipswich Town have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney.
Ipswich Town are looking at the winter transfer window as an opportunity to further bolster their squad, as they want to secure promotion to the English top flight. They were keen on adding more quality to their midfield and had their eyes set on Tom Cairney.
With his contract running out at the end of the season, Ipswich were hoping to strike a deal with Fulham. However, they have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit as the Cottagers have decided against cashing in on him in the winter transfer window, as per a report from TEAMtalk.
Cairney joined Fulham back in 2015 from Blackburn Rovers, and he has only gone from strength to strength since. He has been one of their mainstays over the years and has earned legendary status at the club over the last decade.
The 34-year-old has featured in over 350 matches for them and has contributed towards 87 goals. While he has had limited game time in the ongoing campaign, Cairney did start their last two outings against Liverpool and Chelsea.
Cairney to continue at Fulham amidst exit links
While limited minutes have resulted in a lot of talk about his future, he remains a very important part of Marco Silva’s plans. He was handed a one-year extension last summer, and if he carries on in a similar fashion, Fulham could certainly hand him another short-term deal to continue at Craven Cottage.
Given his contract situation, Ipswich Town were hoping to get their hands on the 34-year-old. They are eyeing an automatic promotion spot and want to bolster their midfield to increase their chances. An experienced campaigner like Cairney could have done wonders for their team.
However, they are unlikely to get their hands on him in this transfer window, as Fulham have no intentions of selling him mid-season. More importantly, the player is happy at the club and doesn’t intend to push for a move away anytime soon.
