West Ham United losing ground in Charlie Cresswell chase

West Ham could walk away from their pursuit of defensive target Charlie Cresswell owing to the complications in agreeing on a deal.

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham United are losing massive ground in their pursuit of Charlie Cresswell and could move on to alternative targets. The Toulouse defender was considered a key target in this window, but the Hammers are struggling to agree terms around the transfer.

West Ham United find themselves in a precarious position with their season, as the threat of relegation looms large. The Hammers are currently 18th in the Premier League and some seven points off the nearest safety spot, which does make the possibility of dropping into the Championship next season a real threat.

Nuno Espirito Santo is eager to strengthen the ranks with some key positions to fill in this window. Two strikers in Taty Castellanos and Pablo, have arrived in the early period of this month, while they are also angling for a defensive midfielder as well as wide forwards, plus a central defender.

West Ham had eyes on Charlie Cresswell, with the Toulouse star seen as someone who could come in and help the team immediately. The East London outfit have held talks with the Ligue 1 side for the 23-year-old 1 defender, but things have not gone to plan.

It appears the Irons could pull away from the pursuit as they are struggling to agree to terms with Toulouse at the moment. Whether the 23-year-old Englishman is open to the idea of joining West Ham is also in question, as there is no clarity on his preference.

West Ham to abandon Charlie Cresswell chase?

As things stand, West Ham are expected to cool their interest in Charlie Cresswell and look at alternative targets. It could be a combination of multiple issues, including the player’s preference, with the English defender attracting plenty of suitors in the market from earlier.

West Ham are likely to look at alternatives, including Chelsea outcast Axel Disasi, although they must be quick in their decision-making, given Leeds United are also chasing the Frenchman. For now, the chase of Cresswell could be about to end, with the Hammers likely to pursue alternative targets to shore up their backline.
