Aston Villa and Leeds United are reportedly keen on signing 27-year-old Dutch centre-back Danilho Doekhi from Bundesliga club Union Berlin in the winter transfer window.
According to a report by German outlet Kicker, Danilho Doekhi is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are keen on bolstering their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the winter transfer window. So, the 27-year-old Union Berlin centre-back has emerged as a target for the West Yorkshire outfit.
The Dutchman is also a target for Leeds United, with the West Yorkshire outfit also eager to sign a centre-back in the ongoing transfer window. Meanwhile, Union Berlin will be in a bind over a possible sale, as Doekhi has entered the final six months of his contract with the Bundesliga club.
How has Danilho Doekhi fared at Union Berlin?
Danilho Doekhi has been one of the most dependable defenders in the Bundesliga since joining Union Berlin from Vitesse Arnhem in July 2022. A native of Rotterdam, the 27-year-old spent his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at XerxesDZB and Excelsior Rotterdam before graduating from the youth division at Ajax. However, he has risen in prominence at Union Berling.
Doekhi has made over 100 appearances thus far for Union Berlin while chipping in with 15 goals and two assists. Meanwhile, the Dutch defender’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. A move to the Premier League might be on the cards before the winter transfer window shuts down, with Aston Villa and Leeds United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Leeds United’s interest in Danilho Doekhi makes sense. The Whites are scouring the market for a centre-back, as Sebastiaan Bornauw’s long-term future is uncertain amid his links with Bundesliga club FC Koln. Several candidates have thus emerged on Leeds United’s radar, with Doekhi also a viable target.
As for Aston Villa, the Villans are eager to sign a centre-back this month, as Tyrone Mings has struggled with fitness issues in the last few seasons. Additionally, the experienced centre-back is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career. So, Doekhi is an option worth considering for Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, with Doekhi entering the final six months of his contract with Union Berlin, the Bundesliga outfit may consider a January exit for the Dutchman. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 27-year-old centre-back.
