Serie A giants AS Roma reportedly fear they may miss out on 24-year-old Manchester United attacker Joshua Zirkzee after Ruben Amorim’s departure from Old Trafford.
According to a report by Corriere dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Joshua Zirkzee is the subject of interest of AS Roma. The Serie A heavyweights are eager to bolster their offensive unit by signing a versatile attacker in the winter transfer window. So, the 24-year-old Manchester United centre-forward has emerged as a target for the Giallorossi.
However, the latest report has revealed the Italian club’s concerns, as they have developed concerns that the Dutchman may remain at Manchester United beyond the winter transfer window after Ruben Amorim’s departure. The decision-makers at AS Roma “fear losing” Zirkzee and that “he could regain focus” at the Premier League club in the coming weeks.
How has Joshua Zirkzee fared at Manchester United?
Joshua Zirkzee has endured a frustrating journey since joining Manchester United from Bologna in July 2024. The 24-year-old arrived at Old Trafford after an impressive 2023/24 campaign with Bologna, which created a sense of optimism around him. However, the player has not been a regular starter for the Premier League club, even though he has shown flashes of brilliance.
The Dutch attacker’s involvement reduced under Ruben Amorim, and he has managed only 474 minutes of game time in 14 outings thus far in the 2025/26 season. However, the Netherlands international remains in demand in the market, with AS Roma among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the winter transfer window.
Serie A return on the horizon?
AS Roma’s interest in Joshua Zirkzee makes sense. The Serie A giants are scouring the market for a productive and versatile attacker heading into the winter transfer window, as Gian Piero Gasperini wants more firepower in the final third. Additionally, Artem Dovbyk’s long-term future is uncertain, as he has struggled in the 2025/26 season.
With Evan Ferguson being the only other striker in Gasperini’s squad, Zirkzee has emerged as a viable target for the Giallorossi. The Dutchman may not take long to settle down at AS Roma, as he has previous experience in Serie A. However, the Italian giants are concerned about their prospects for a January move after Manchester United decided to sack Ruben Amorim.
The Serie A title hopefuls “fear losing” Zirkzee and that “he could regain focus” at Manchester United in the coming weeks. So, while recent reports suggested that a move for the 24-year-old Dutch attacker was close, Amorim’s departure has left AS Roma panicking.
