OGC Nice eyeing Ben Davies swoop

Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur outcast Ben Davies in the upcoming transfer window.

OGC Nice are in the market for a new centre-back to reinforce their backline, and according to a report from L’Equipe, the Ligue 1 outfit have their eyes set on Tottenham’s Ben Davies. The veteran defender is surplus to requirements at the North London club, and the French club end up signing him for a bargain fee.

Davies came up the ranks at Swansea and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before joining Tottenham back in 2014. The Welsh international, who has 100 caps under his belt, has featured in a total of 360 matches for Spurs and has even contributed towards 35 goals.

While he is a left-back by trade, the 32-year-old has been used in more central roles in recent seasons. He looked set to leave the club at the end of last season with his contract at Spurs running out. However, the North London club ended up triggering the option to extend his stay by another 12 months following their Europa League triumph.

However, Thomas Frank hasn’t used him enough so far this season, with just two appearances across competitions. He is frustrated by the lack of minutes and could end up pushing for a move away in the upcoming transfer window.

Nice want to sign Davies

While injuries have troubled him in the recent past, Davies still has a lot of football left in him. Nice, who were interested in him last summer, could end up making a move for him in January as they look to cover for the absence at the back.

The Ligue 1 club are looking for an experienced defender, and Davies is quite high on their wishlist. The French club are without the likes of Dante, Youssouf Ndayishimiye, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Moise Bombito because of injury, and the Spurs centre-back could be an ideal signing for them.

Since he only has six months left on his deal and is not an important part of Frank’s plans, they can certainly strike a deal for him. However, they will face two major hurdles. Firstly, he is on massive wages at Spurs and convincing him to take a massive pay cut won’t be easy, and on top of that, he would want a long-term deal, which could be tricky for Nice.
