Barcelona prefer Marc Guehi move over Pau Torres

Barcelona reportedly prefer a move for Marc Guehi over Aston Villa star Pau Torres and others, as they seek a replacement for the injured Andreas Christensen.

According to Sport, Barcelona are in the market for a new defender following Andreas Christensen’s injury, which could see the Dane miss the remainder of the season and beyond. The Catalans have earmarked a move for Marc Guehi as his replacement.

Barcelona were rocked by Andreas Christensen’s season-ending ACL injury sustained in training, which leaves Hansi Flick with one less central defensive option. Hence, the club are now widely expected to find a replacement in the winter market, as a few names have been mentioned already.

Pau Torres was a player of interest to the Catalans, but the Aston Villa star could be a difficult purchase in the middle of the season. Aston Villa will also demand a premium price for their main man at the back, which may not suit Barcelona’s pockets.

However, the Catalans have other names on their list, such as Nico Schlotterbeck, but the one they want is Marc Guehi. Barcelona had planned a move for Guehi, and with the Christensen injury, they could accelerate their pursuit, although the chase will face complications.

Liverpool are the favourites to sign Guehi either in January or they intend to get him on a free transfer over in the summer. There are others like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and others in the race, with Manchester City also keen on the defender. Hence, the Catalans will have plenty of challenges ahead in the race for Guehi.

Will Barcelona succeed in the Guehi chase?

Barcelona are eager to land a player of Guehi’s calibre, with the cost-effectiveness of the Palace defender’s availability as well as quality making him a top target ahead of the Aston Villa man. Moreover, a January move will be suitable given Christensen could be de-registered from the team for the remainder of the season, thus creating space in the squad for a new addition.

However, there are considerable doubts whether they can get him in January, as Guehi might only leave in the summer on a free transfer. Moreover, the likes of Liverpool are seen as the front-runners in the chase, which could scupper the chances of the Catalans in the race for the Crystal Palace star.
