Newcastle United in transfer tussle to sign Dayann Methalie

Newcastle United are battling a host of clubs in the pursuit of Dayann Methalie ahead of the January window as Eddie Howe seeks a new full-back.

According to Ekrem Konur, Dayann Methalie is emerging as a big target for Newcastle United ahead of the January window. The Toulouse star has seen a prominent rise to being an important player for the Ligue 1 side this term, as the Magpies are part of a host of other clubs chasing his signature.

Toulouse made a calculated decision to promote Dayann Methalie to the first team and signed him to a contract until 2030. The decision has worked wonderfully for the Ligue 1 side so far, with the left-back playing all of their games so far this term.

His importance for Toulouse has not gone unnoticed in the market, as a host of top clubs are looking at Methalie as a potential option in the January window. From Ligue 1, PSG are vying for his signature, as Luis Enrique might want a quality cover for Nuno Mendes, but moving to Paris might curtail the regularity with which the 19-year-old French defensive prodigy is playing currently.

Juventus, Sevilla and Bayer Leverkusen are the other teams vying for the 19-year-old French defensive prodigy’s signature. However, the Toulouse star is also part of Newcastle United’s thinking ahead of January, as Eddie Howe continues to search for a full-back alternative in the market.

It remains to be seen whether Toulouse are about to entertain interest in January for their emerging key star. There’s the possibility of the Ligue 1 side demanding a top fee for the 19-year-old French defensive prodigy, which may not be an issue for someone like Newcastle United or PSG.

Why are Newcastle United looking at a new full-back?

The big reason for Howe to want a new full-back is to add a few more options to the backline amid fitness concerns with a few of their key stars. Dan Burn suffered a punctured lung that will keep him out for a while, whereas Emil Krafth continues to struggle with fitness issues. The Magpies were linked with right-back Sacha Boey recently, as this could be designed to use Valentino Livramento on the left.

Axel Disasi is another name on their list ahead of January, although the idea of signing a specialist left-back is a new one at the moment. Newcastle United already have the formidable Lewis Hall in the role, but Howe could potentially add to the competition in the role, and predominantly use someone like Dan Burn centrally moving forward, which does solve a lot of problems.
