Promise David reluctant to join West Ham United, reason revealed

West Ham United may not succeed in the race to sign 24-year-old Canadian international Promise David from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise.

According to a report by talkSPORT, Promise David is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the winter transfer window. So, the 24-year-old Union Saint-Gilloise centre-forward has emerged as a target for the East London outfit.

However, a winter move for the Brampton native is a tall order for West Ham, as he is “reluctant to swap playing in the Champions League for a Premier League relegation battle” midway through the 2025/26 season. So, West Ham must return to the drawing board and sign an alternative in the coming weeks.

Who is Promise David?

Promise David has established himself as one of European football’s most exciting young strikers since joining Union Saint-Gilloise from Kalju FC in July 2024. The 24-year-old enjoyed a solid debut season and has continued those exploits in his second campaign with the Belgian outfit. He has also earned the moniker “Baby Lukaku” due to a close resemblance to Romelu Lukaku’s style.

The Canadian international has an excellent record of ten goals in 1,080 minutes of game time across 24 appearances thus far in the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, David’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. West Ham United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the winter transfer window.

London calling?

West Ham United’s interest in Promise David is understandable. The Hammers are scouring the market for a striker heading into the winter transfer window, as Niclas Fullkrug is pushing for a January departure from the London Stadium. Additionally, Callum Wilson is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career.

Several candidates, including Valentin Castellanos, have thus emerged on West Ham’s radar, with David also a viable target. Recent reports have suggested that the Hammers are in pole position to sign the Union Saint-Gilloise striker. However, a deal will not materialise due to the player’s hesitance.

The report suggests that David is “reluctant to swap playing in the Champions League for a Premier League relegation battle” midway through the 2025/26 season. So, West Ham must return to the drawing board and pursue an alternative in the winter transfer window.
