Barcelona will reportedly aim to beat Liverpool in the race to sign 25-year-old English international Marc Guehi in a bargain move next year.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Marc Guehi is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are eager to bolster their defensive unit by signing a centre-back next year. So, the 25-year-old Crystal Palace captain has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.
The latest update has revealed that the Catalan giants have “made two formal approaches to Guehi’s representatives in the past fortnight” amid hopes of sealing a bargain move. However, the Englishman is also a target for Liverpool, although Barcelona will have an advantage in the race to sign him, as they can begin negotiations for a pre-contract agreement from January 1.
How has Marc Guehi become a household name?
Marc Guehi is midway through his final season with Crystal Palace after entering the final 12 months of his deal. The 25-year-old has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since arriving at Selhurst Park from Chelsea in July 2021, making significant progress in the last four years while becoming the club captain.
The English international has made over 150 appearances thus far for Crystal Palace while chipping in with nine goals and eight assists. However, Guehi’s contract situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs. Liverpool and Barcelona are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature after the latter came close to securing his services in the summer transfer window.
What next?
Liverpool’s continued interest in Marc Guehi is understandable. Giovanni Leoni has picked up a long-term knee injury and will not be fit enough to start the 2026/26 season. Additionally, Ibrahima Konate’s long-term future remains uncertain, even though Real Madrid will not pursue him next summer. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk is on the wrong side of 30. So, Guehi is a viable target for Liverpool.
As for Barcelona, the Blaugrana may part ways with Andreas Christensen next year, and the Crystal Palace captain is a viable option to replace the Danish defender. Additionally, Inigo Martinez has left a gaping hole since Barcelona sanctioned his departure in the summer. So, Guehi is an option worth considering, and the reigning La Liga champions have begun the move to secure the Englishman’s services.
Barcelona will attempt to steal a march on Liverpool in the race to sign Guehi, and they have “made two formal approaches to Guehi’s representatives in the past fortnight” amid hopes of sealing a bargain move. The Catalan giants also have an advantage over the Reds, as they can open talks over a pre-contract agreement from January 1. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 25-year-old English international.
