Manchester United recently dispatched scouts to watch 2006-born Croatian midfield sensation Sergej Levak in action for Atalanta’s under-23 side.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Sergej Levak is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder next year. So, the 19-year-old Atalanta wonderkid has emerged as a target for the Premier League club.
The English giants have recently sent scouts to watch the Croat in action for Atalanta’s under-23 side, and they have monitored him in a few games. Talent-spotters have compared the 2006-born prospect to Rodri due to his “impressive timing when it comes to getting into goal”.
Who is Sergej Levak?
Sergej Levak is the latest midfielder from his homeland to rise in prominence. Croatia has produced several legendary midfielders in the last two decades, with Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, and Mateo Kovacic leading the charge. The last few years have also witnessed the advent of Luka Sucic, Petar Sucic, and Gabriel Vidovic, among others.
As for Levak, the 19-year-old spent most of his formative years thus far in his homeland before arriving in Italy in January 2023. However, after two and a half years with AS Roma, he joined Atalanta this past summer. The Croatian midfield sensation has made 13 appearances thus far for Atalanta’s under-23 side, and his progress has piqued the attention of several bigwigs, including Manchester United.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Manchester United’s interest in Sergej Levak is understandable. While the Red Devils were busy reinforcing their first-team squad in the summer transfer window, they have been working on signing young prospects in the last few months. That has led Manchester United to Cristian Orozco, with the youngster on the verge of joining the Premier League club.
With Sekou Kone already at the club, signing Orozco and Levak will “future proof” Manchester United’s midfield unit. Additionally, with the 19-year-old Croat possessing “Rodri-like” qualities, he can be the long-sought holding midfield solution in the middle of the park.
The report suggests there is a belief that Levak is wasting his talents plying his trade for Atalanta’s under-23 side. So, a move to Manchester United may be on the cards next year, with the Red Devils sending scouts to monitor him regularly.
