Real Madrid have ruled out the possibility of signing Ibrahima Konate; Liverpool have been informed about their decision.
Ibrahima Konate’s future has been a massive talking point for months, as his contract at Liverpool is running out. The French international has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. But according to David Ornstein, Los Blancos have decided against signing the Liverpool defensive mainstay. They have made their decision known to the Merseyside club.
Konate has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Reds from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 in a deal worth £36 million. Not only has he established himself as one of their mainstays, but he is also widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
While he has been a bit inconsistent this season, there is no shortage of interest in him, with his contract running out at the end of the season. Liverpool have been pushing to renew his deal, but they haven’t tasted any success yet.
The Reds fear a situation where he walks away from the club for free, just like Trent Alexander-Arnold. Real Madrid, who are keen on reinforcing their backline amidst uncertainty around David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger’s future, had their eyes on Konate.
Real Madrid won’t make a move for Konate
Given their track record of signing world-class players for free, Liverpool were really worried about losing him for free. However, they have received a boost in their hopes of keeping him at the club beyond this season as Real Madrid have decided against signing him.
They have informed the Merseyside club that they have no interest in signing the French international. The Spanish giants have other targets they seem to prefer over the 26-year-old. However, Madrid’s decision doesn’t guarantee his continuity at the club as renewal talks could still go either way. Konate could still choose to run down his deal and leave Anfield as a free agent.
