Bruno Guimaraes ready to stay at Newcastle amid Manchester City links

Newcastle United advancing talks to sign Malick Thiaw.

Manchester City have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Newcastle United midfield mainstay Bruno Guimaraes.

According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Bruno Guimaraes seems all set to continue at Newcastle United despite interest from rivals Manchester City. The Brazilian international is quite happy at the Tyneside club and would be open to extending his stay.

Guimaraes hasn’t looked back since joining Eddie Howe’s team at the start of 2022 from Olympique Lyon. Not only has he established himself as one of their mainstays, but the 27-year-old is also widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

City’s interest in Guimaraes

His consistent performances have put him on the radar of Manchester City, who have already made multiple attempts to try to lure him away. Pep Guardiola is a massive admirer of the Brazilian midfielder and has been pushing for his signature over the last few seasons.

City once again made an informal enquiry about his availability this summer, but Newcastle rebuffed their approach. Guardiola’s team haven’t given up. While the Manchester-based giants added Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, they retain interest in Guimaraes, as he could form a very dependable partnership with Rodri in the centre of the park.

However, prising him away from the Magpies won’t be easy. The 27-year-old is enjoying life at the Tyneside club, and he won’t push for a move away as things stand. They have Champions League football, and if they continue to perform, he is unlikely to force an exit like Alexander Isak did during the summer.

O’Rourke’s take on Guimaraes’ future

While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke said: “It was an inquiry from Man City in the summer rather than anything firm or official on bids or talks or anything like that.

“Guimaraes indicated that he was happy at Newcastle and Newcastle were definitely not interested in selling him and that remains the plan right now as well.

“There’ll be discussions potentially to be held over a new contract to see if they can keep him on Tyneside.

“As I said, Guimaraes seems like he’s happy at Newcastle. We know that Newcastle are very happy with him.

“If they’re competing in the Champions League, I don’t see any reason why Guimaraes would push for a move away.”

While his current deal runs until the summer of 2028, Newcastle are keen to secure his long-term future with a new contract. They want to reward him for his consistent performances and loyalty. With fresh terms on the horizon, the 27-year-old has another opportunity to reaffirm his commitment by putting pen to paper.

He is enjoying life at the club, and interest from Manchester City has not turned his head, suggesting there is a strong chance he will sign a new long-term deal.
