Manchester United are ready to test Everton’s resolve with a £65 million bid for Jarrad Branthwaite, with Liverpool also keen.
According to the Daily Mirror, Jarrad Branthwaite remains Manchester United’s No.1 defensive target ahead of next summer. The Red Devils are ready to test Everton’s resolve with a staggering £65 million bid to sign the 23-year-old defender, with Liverpool considered their closest rival for the centre-back.
Two summers ago, Manchester United had a couple of bids rejected by Everton for promising defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The 23-year-old defender has since become one of the top players in his position in England, and hence, there’s much more demand.
Having more than doubled his wages after penning fresh terms with Everton, Manchester United’s interest in the 23-year-old defender remains. The Red Devils view him as a priority signing for their backline and the ideal replacement for Harry Maguire, who could leave at the end of the season.
Having triggered an extension in Maguire’s deal, Manchester United are not leaning towards offering him fresh terms. Hence, they view Jarrad Branthwaite as their No.1 target to replace the 32-year-old centre-back next summer, but a deal could be tricky due to the Everton star committing to a new contract.
Manchester United reportedly held talks with Branthwaite in the summer, and now, they are prepared to table a £65 million bid to test the waters with Everton. It remains to be seen whether the Toffees accept such a proposal, although in all likelihood they will either shut the door next summer on any sale of the 23-year-old defender or demand significantly more than what the Red Devils paid for Maguire.
Liverpool to rival Manchester United in Jarrad Branthwaite chase
Liverpool are also keen on Branthwaite, although the deal for the reigning Premier League champions is seen as a difficult proposition. For starters, any move to the red side of Merseyside will depend on Everton’s stance on such a sale, especially considering the Premier League champions are their local rivals, while they will also be in a strong position to demand significantly more for the 23-year-old defender.
Hence, Manchester United may have a better chance in that regard, although a host of other clubs are keeping close tabs on Branthwaite. The most important role here is that of Everton and their immediate stance on the defender’s future, and they are unlikely to entertain offers next summer.
