Tottenham are keen on acquiring the services of Sevilla attacker Ruben Vargas, but they won’t make a move in January.
Ruben Vargas is one of the names on Tottenham Hotspur’s wishlist, as Thomas Frank was keen on adding more quality in the wide areas. But, according to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, the North London club won’t be making a move for the Swiss international in the winter transfer window.
Spurs had quite an impressive transfer window as they added a lot of quality to their squad. It has helped Frank get off to a promising start. However, they did miss out on one of their targets during the summer transfer window.
Tottenham are keen on Ruben Vargas
Tottenham were keen on adding Manchester City’s Savinho to their squad and did put in a lot of effort. But Spurs failed to secure his services as Pep Guardiola’s team ended up blocking the move. Having failed to secure his services, Frank’s team shifted their focus towards Vargas.
The 27-year-old winger has established himself as a key figure at Sevilla following his move from FC Augsburg at the start of the year. While Ruben Vargas did not get many opportunities in the second half of last season, the Swiss winger has been on fire of late.
In his first four La Liga outings, he has one goal and three assists. His performances have attracted interest from multiple top clubs, and Spurs are one of them. While the North London club were expected to make a move for him in the winter transfer window, there seems to have been a major change in Frank’s plans.
The former Brentford boss is happy with the performances of the wide players at his disposal, and having signed Xavi Simons on deadline day, he feels he has enough quality options in his ranks. As a result, Spurs are all set to focus on strengthening other key areas instead of pursuing Ruben Vargas..
O’Rourke’s take on Spurs’ pursuit of Vargas
While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke said, “It’s an interesting one. Spurs tried for Savinho in the summer, but weren’t able to get a deal done as City blocked that. Vargas is a player who’s done really well for Sevilla, Swiss international as well. So he’s obviously, I think, attracting interest from a number of clubs, not just Tottenham.
“Spurs are quite well-stocked out wide after they got a deal done for Simons, who plays in the same position as Vargas. They’ve also got Odobert, Tel and even Richarlison who can play out wide, so I don’t think it’s a priority for Tottenham to be signing another wide player.
“Vargas is a good player, he’s under contract at Sevilla until 2029, so they’re going to demand a decent fee as well for the winger. So as I said, I don’t think it’s a priority for Tottenham in the January window, so while Vargas has emerged on their radar, it’s not a move Spurs will be pushing for in January.”
Thomas Frank already has Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mathys Tel, and Richarlison available for the wide roles, so bringing in another winger is no longer a priority. With Vargas tied to Sevilla until 2029, the Spanish club are expected to demand a significant fee, and Tottenham are unlikely to make that kind of investment midway through the season. Instead, they are more likely to prioritise strengthening other areas of the squad in January.
