Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old Danish international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in a deal worth €60 million.
According to a report by Spanish outet Fichajes, Morten Hjulmand is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder next year. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP midfield powerhouse has emerged as a target for the North London club.
The 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners are ready to fork out €60 million to sign the Dane from Sporting CP next year. The amount “reflects the importance” that Tottenham will place on a “strategic signing” to strength the first-team squad.
Morten Hjulmand and his exploits in Portugal
Morten Hjulmand has established himself as one of the most underrated midfielders in the world since joining Sporting CP from US Lecce in a deal worth €20 million in August 2023. The 26-year-old did not take long to establish a foothold at the Portuguese club, with Ruben Amorim bringing the best out of him and installing him as the club captain.
The Danish international has made over 100 appearances thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with eight goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Tottenham Hotspur will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature next year.
London calling?
Morten Hjulmand has been on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, considering Yves Bissouma has no future at the North London club. Additionally, it is unclear if Tottenham will complete a permanent move for Joao Palhinha after he returns to Bayern Munich following his season-long loan spell.
Meanwhile, Rodrigo Bentancur’s long-term future is uncertain, with recent reports linking the Uruguayan international with Atletico Madrid. So, Tottenham can do with a new holding midfielder, with Hjulmand emerging as a viable target. The Lilywhites are ready to pay €60 million to sign the 26-year-old Dane next year.
Hjulmand’s leadership ability and solidity in the middle of the park makes him an appealing target. However, it is unclear if a bid worth €60 million will be enough to take the Danish midfield powerhouse to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next year.
