Oliver Glasner was critical in collapsed Liverpool move for Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi was expected to join Liverpool during the transfer deadline day, but the move collapsed in the end.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Oliver Glasner played a pivotal role in Crystal Palace pulling the plug on Liverpool’s deadline-day move for Marc Guehi. The Austrian tactician threatened the South London club, saying he could leave them if they sold the club captain without bringing in a quality replacement.

Crystal Palace failed to sign a quality player to replace the defender after Igor Julio snubbed them, and they decided to block the exit of the 25-year-old. The Crystal Palace skipper will be thoroughly disappointed with how the situation played out. He had informed the South London outfit that he wanted to join Liverpool and fight for major trophies with them.

The English international helped them win the FA Cup and the Community Shield as well. Keeping him against his wishes could prove problematic for Crystal Palace now. It remains to be seen whether the defender can focus on his football once again and perform at a high level now.

Can Liverpool sign Guehi in future?

Liverpool are expected to come back for the defender in the near future. The Englishman will be a free agent in the summer, and Liverpool will be able to sign him for a reasonable amount of money in January.

Crystal Palace had agreed a £35 million deal with Liverpool on deadline day, and they could have banked a substantial amount of money for the player. The Eagles are now likely to miss out on millions, and they have left the player in a spot of bother as well. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

Crystal Palace were going through a purple patch, and they managed to win two trophies recently. They have secured European football for this season as well. What was supposed to be a glorious time for the club has now descended into chaos because of their transfer decision.

It is understandable why the manager did not want to lose his best defender without a quality replacement, as it could jeopardise their season. However, keeping the player against his wishes is unlikely to help either. If the defender is unhappy, he is unlikely to be able to perform at his best.
