Liverpool are reportedly on the cusp of signing 25-year-old Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in a deadline-day move.
It seems that Liverpool and Crystal Palace have finally agreed on a deal for Marc Guehi. The 25-year-old will now head to Liverpool to complete his move before the window closes. Liverpool are paying £35 million to sign the player, and Crystal Palace have included a 10 per cent sell-on clause in his contract, as per Fabrizio Romano.
The English defender was in the final year of his contract, and Crystal Palace were under pressure to sell him. The Eagles could not have afforded to lose a player of his quality as a free agent. It makes sense for them to let him move on for a reasonable amount of money this summer.
His departure will certainly be a blow for the club. Guehi was not only their best defender, but he was also the captain of the club. The 25-year-old has been instrumental in their success in recent months. Crystal Palace have won the FA Cup and the Community Shield this year, and he has been outstanding for them. It will be interesting to see if the player can establish himself as a regular starter for Liverpool.
Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are currently the first-choice central defenders at the club. The England international will not want to sit on the bench at Liverpool, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. There is no doubt that he is one of the best defenders in the league right now, and he could be an asset for the club.
Konate is in the final year of his contract, and it will not be a surprise if he decides to leave for free next summer amid his links with Real Madrid. Guehi could be the ideal replacement for him. The Englishman is well settled in the Premier League, and he will look to make an instant impact.
The Chelsea academy graduate has been linked with multiple top clubs in recent years, and moving to Liverpool would be ideal for him. He is certainly good enough to compete at the highest level.
