Leeds United fail with approach for Timo Werner

Leeds United recently approached 29-year-old German international Timo Werner over a possible move in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by German outlet BILD, Timo Werner is the subject of interest from Leeds United. The Whites are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a versatile attacker in the final days of the summer transfer window. So, the 29-year-old RB Leipzig forward has emerged as a target for the newly promoted Premier League club.

The West Yorkshire outfit contacted the former Chelsea and Tottenham attacker’s entourage to discuss a possible move in the summer transfer window. However, Werner has rejected Leeds United’s approach, with Burnley and clubs from Italy, Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia also receiving a setback in their efforts to secure his services in the coming days.

Timo Werner and his Premier League woes

The Premier League has not been a happy hunting ground for Timo Werner, apart from a few flashes of brilliance. The 29-year-old attacker’s first spell in England saw him spend two years with Chelsea before returning to RB Leipzig in August 2022. However, the player could not rediscover his best in his second coming at the Bundesliga club, and Tottenham signed him on loan in January 2024.

The German international spent 18 months at Tottenham across two loan spells, but he managed only three goals and seven assists in 41 appearances for the North London outfit. However, while Werner has returned to RB Leipzig, his stock is reasonably high. Premier League clubs, in particular, are interested, with Leeds United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

From a Red Bull-owned club to a Red Bull-sponsored team soon?

Leeds United’s interest in Timo Werner is understandable. The Whites have already reinforced their offensive unit by signing several attackers in the summer transfer window. However, with Patrick Bamford and Largie Ramazani facing an uncertain future at the West Yorkshire club, they are open to more business to bolster the attack.

Several candidates, including Facundo Buonanotte, have emerged on Leeds United’s radar, with Werner also a viable target. The newly promoted Premier League club did not waste any time in contacting the former Chelsea and Tottenham attacker, but they have received a rejection from him.

Werner also turned down Burnley, while he does not want to play for clubs in Italy, Turkiye, or Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, reports earlier this year linked Werner with the New York Red Bulls, and a move to MLS may be on the cards. However, his €10 million-a-year wages may pose a problem for many suitors.
