Newcastle United fail with bid to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen, need to pay £60 million

Newcastle United have failed with a £50 million bid for Jorgen Strand Larsen, with a higher bid likely to further test Wolves’ resolve.

According to The Athletic, Wolves have turned down a £50 million bid from Newcastle United for striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Midlands side insists the Premier League striker is not for sale at the moment, although the Magpies could consider making a higher bid to further test their resolve on the attacker.

Newcastle United’s search for a new striker continued against the backdrop of the Alexander Isak saga. The Swede’s future is still up in the air as there’s no update on whether the Magpies are open to a sale or when he will return to training with the team.

In the background, Newcastle United continued to cut a frustrated figure in the market following multiple rejections with their top striker targets. They have been chasing Yoanne Wissa and saw their latest bid of £35 million plus £5 million in add-ons turned down by Brentford, who continued to seek a much higher figure.

They have not given up hope on Wissa and could yet return with an improved offer before the window shuts down. They have also been chasing Jorgen Strand Larsen; however, Wolves had earlier indicated the Premier League striker is not for sale.

Now, Newcastle United have failed with a £50 million offer for the attacker, with the bid consisting of no add-ons. Wolves, who only made the Premier League striker’s move permanent to the tune of £25 million, could have doubled their money, but they insist there’s not enough time for them to find a replacement and that the player will not be sold under any circumstances.

Could Newcastle United make an improved bid?

Football Insider insists that Newcastle United could test Wolves’ resolve with an improved offer of £60 million for Strand Larsen. Whether that would suffice the demands of the Midlands side remains the question. David Ornstein also insisted that the pursuit of the Premier League striker was not linked to Isak, as Strand Larsen was seen as a replacement for the departed Callum Wilson.

As for Newcastle United, their best bet could be making an improved offer for Wissa that comes close to Brentford’s demand. As things stand, Strand Larsen may not move despite reports stating that he had an agreement on personal terms, as Wolves may not have the time to bring in a replacement that is Premier League-ready.
