Out-of-favour Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno is reportedly on the verge of joining La Liga club Girona in a bargain move in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Jacob Tanswell on The Athletic, Alex Moreno has been the subject of interest from Girona. The White and Reds have been keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a left-back in the summer transfer window after selling Miguel Gutierrez to Napoli. So, the Aston Villa misfit emerged as a target for the Catalan outfit.
The Spaniard will return to La Liga in a bargain move, with Aston Villa accepting the prospect of offloading him for free. Moreno will undergo his medical tests on Thursday before signing a two-year contract. The agreement with Aston Villa and Girona will include a 40 per cent sell-on clause for the West Midlands outfit.
Alex Moreno and his Aston Villa woes
Alex Moreno has failed to make his mark since joining Aston Villa from Real Betis in January 2023 in a deal worth €15 million. The 32-year-old was among the most underrated full-backs in La Liga when he moved to the West Midlands club. However, after sharing game time with Lucas Digne in his first 18 months at Aston Villa, the Villans loaned him to Nottingham Forest last summer.
The loan spell with Nottingham Forest also failed, as the Spanish full-back was in and out of the starting lineup in the 2024/25 season and did not even manage 1,500 minutes of game time across 19 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Moreno has not been in Aston Villa’s plans for the 2025/26 season, and the Villans have told him to find a new club. That next destination will be Girona.
La Liga return beckons
Girona’s interest in Alex Moreno is understandable. The White and Reds have been scouring the market for a left-back amid uncertainties surrounding Miguel Gutierrez’s long-term future. The former Real Madrid defender’s spell has ended, as he has joined Napoli in a deal worth €18 million.
So, Girona must sign a replacement, with Moreno emerging as a viable target in the last few days. The Catalan outfit and Aston Villa now have an agreement, with the West Midlands outfit accepting the prospect of parting ways with the 32-year-old Spaniard as a free agent.
Moreno will undergo his medical checks on Thursday, and Aston Villa will have a 40 per cent sell-on clause in the agreement with Girona. The Spanish full-back will hope to resurrect his stuttering fortunes, and his extensive experience in La Liga should help him settle down at Estadi Montilivi.
