West Ham United table bid to sign Pierce Charles

West Ham United will reportedly look to sign 24-year-old English goalkeeper Pierce Charles from EFL Championship club Sheffield Wednesday in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by The Independent, Pierce Charles is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing another goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. So, the 20-year-old Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the East London outfit.

The Hammers have submitted a multi-million-pound bid to sign the Englishman from the crisis-struck EFL Championship club. However, the Owls have rejected West Ham’s proposal, surprising many inside the club amid the crippling financial issues at the Hillsborough Stadium.

Who is Pierce Charles?

Pierce Charles has established himself as one of the best young goalkeeping prospects in his homeland since breaking into the first-team squad at Sheffield Wednesday. Shea Charles’s younger brother, the 20-year-old shot-stopper spent most of his formative years with Manchester City but graduated from the youth division at Sheffield Wednesday.

The English goalkeeping prospect has turned out 17 times thus far for Sheffield Wednesday while keeping one clean sheet and conceding 24 goals. Meanwhile, Charles’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. West Ham United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

West Ham United’s interest in Pierce Charles is understandable. The Hammers have already landed a goalkeeper this summer by signing Mads Hermansen from Leicester City. However, West Ham’s goalkeeping scouting trip in the EFL Championship has not ended, as Charles has emerged as a target for the East London outfit.

While Graham Potter has two goalkeepers in his squad, Alphonse Areola’s long-term future at the London Stadium is uncertain. So, signing Charles as a long-term solution between the sticks would make sense for West Ham. However, they have failed with their opening bid to land the 20-year-old Englishman.

West Ham and Rangers submitted a multi-million-pound bid to sign Charles, but they have failed to convince Sheffield Wednesday, with the EFL Championship club rejecting the proposals. That has surprised many at Hillsborough, and it will be interesting to see if West Ham and Rangers return with new offers.
