Tottenham Hotspur will aim to tie 25-year-old English wing-back Djed Spence to a bumper new contract in the coming weeks.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Djed Spence has secured his future at Tottenham Hotspur after his resurgent run in the last 12 months. While the Englishman has yet to sign a new contract, the Lilywhites have intensified their talks to tie him to a bumper deal, with the wide player impressing Thomas Frank with his attitude and performances.
Djed Spence and his Tottenham rollercoaster
Djed Spence has had to bide his time since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Middlesbrough in a deal worth £20 million in July 2022. A native of London, the English wing-back spent most of his formative years in his home city, passing through the academies at Junior Elite FC and Fulham before graduating from the youth division at Middlesbrough.
The 25-year-old rose in prominence during an excellent loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the 2021/22 season, helping the Tricky Trees secure Premier League promotion. That helped Spence secure a move worth £20 million to Tottenham, although it has not been a bed of roses for the player at the North London club.
Spence’s debut season started on the worst possible note, as Antonio Conte suggested the wide player was a club-driven signing. The Englishman needed loan spells with Leeds United and Genoa before finally establishing a foothold at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, landing on his feet in the 2024/25 season.
What next?
Djed Spence has seen his stock soar in the last 12 months, and his attitude and performances in the pre-season campaign have impressed new Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank. The former Middlesbrough prospect started as the left wing-back for the North London club in the UEFA Super Cup tie against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
So, the 25-year-old Englishman may have usurped Destiny Udogie as the new first-choice left wing-back. Meanwhile, Spence’s rising stature at Tottenham will come with an improved salary, with the North London club discussing a bumper new contract with his entourage.
The Lilywhites are ready to intensify their talks with Spence’s representatives, and the two parties may soon find an agreement over a new contract. So, it will be interesting to see if the English wide player continues on his upward trajectory in the 2025/26 season.
