Atletico Madrid eyeing Christopher Nkunku swoop

Atletico Madrid will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old French international Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Christopher Nkunku is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a versatile attacker in the summer transfer window. So, the 27-year-old wantaway Chelsea forward has emerged as a target for Los Rojiblancos.

The Spanish giants have failed to sign Enzo Millot, with the Frenchman joining Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli. So, they have set their sights on Nkunku, with Chelsea demanding around €50 million to part ways with him. However, Atletico Madrid will aim to sign the Frenchman in a deal worth €40 million in the summer transfer window.

Christopher Nkunku and his Chelsea woes

Christopher Nkunku has seen his stock plummet since joining Chelsea from RB Leipzig in July 2023. The 27-year-old versatile attacker’s arrival generated hype and fanfare among the Chelsea fans after his exploits in the Bundesliga. However, fitness issues blighted the player’s progress in his debut season before he struggled for game time in his second campaign.

Nevertheless, Nkunku has a decent tally of 18 goals and five assists in 62 outings thus far for Chelsea. However, the French international has no future at Stamford Bridge after growing frustrated with life at the West London club. The situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, with Atletico Madrid among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

La Liga move on the horizon?

Christopher Nkunku has been on Atletico Madrid’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, considering Diego Simeone wants more firepower in the final third. The report suggests the wantaway Chelsea attacker is an alternative to his compatriot Enzo Millot, a midfielder. However, he will likely reinforce Atletico Madrid’s offensive unit.

With Alexander Sorloth facing an uncertain future at Estadio Metropolitano and Antoine Griezmann approaching the twilight of his career, Atletico Madrid must sign a productive attacker. So, the 27-year-old Frenchman is a viable target, with Los Rojiblancos aiming to sign him from Chelsea in a deal worth €40 million.

However, Chelsea will demand around €50 million to part ways with Nkunku, leaving the two clubs with a valuation gap. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea can compel Atletico Madrid to offer €50 million to sign the French international in the summer transfer window.
