Tottenham Hotspur have an agreement in place to sign Bayer Munich outcast Joao Palhinha on a season-long loan.
According to a report from The Athletic, Joao Palhinha is all set to secure a return to the Premier League as Tottenham have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich over a season-long loan deal. He is expected to undergo his medical as a new Spurs player on Friday.
Palhinha made a name for himself while playing for Fulham. On the back of his impressive performances for the Cottagers, Bayern Munich forked out €56 million to sign him last summer.
While they had a lot of expectations from the Portuguese international, the move did not really work out as he failed to establish himself as a key figure under Vincent Kompany. He was involved in only 25 fixtures, and he only started in 10 of those games.
The experienced midfielder was behind Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Konrad Laimer in the pecking order. Since things are unlikely to change, Palhinha is keen on leaving Bayern Munich in search of a more prominent role with the World Cup coming up next summer.
Meanwhile, the German giants have also been open to his departure. Tottenham were well aware of the situation, and they seem to have made the most out of it. Thomas Frank was keen on bringing in a new holding midfielder, and the former Fulham star was quite high on their wishlist.
Spurs strike a deal to sign Palhinha
While Bayern Munich were looking for a permanent deal, Spurs managed to convince them about a loan deal with a buy option. Palhinha is set to join the North London club on a season-long loan after he completes his medical, which is expected to take place in Germany today (Friday).
Spurs will be covering his entire wages, and the deal includes a buy option worth €30 million. Depending on his performance during the 2025/26 season, Frank’s team could decide whether they would like to make the move permanent.
While Palhinha did not have the best of times at Bayern Munich, he is a proven Premier League star and could prove to be a valuable addition to Tottenham’s first team. His experience could come in handy, and he could help them better control the tempo of games.
