Manchester United will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old Danish international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Morten Hjulmand is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP mainstay has emerged as a target for the Premier League.
The Red Devils have already submitted a bid worth €40 million to sign the Dane in the summer transfer window. Sporting CP would prefer to recoup around €50 million to part ways with Hjulmand, despite his release clause having a value of €80 million. The player is also a target for Juventus.
Morten Hjulmand and his career so far
Morten Hjulmand has been one of the most underrated midfielders in the world in the last half a decade. The 26-year-old spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at FC Copenhagen. The player rose in prominence during his spell with US Lecce before going from strength to strength at Sporting CP.
The Danish international has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with seven goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Manchester United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Ruben Amorim reunion on the horizon?
Manchester United’s interest in Morten Hjulmand is understandable. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a holding midfielder this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Casemiro’s long-term future. In addition, Manuel Ugarte has struggled to make his mark since joining Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
So, Hjulmand has emerged as a viable target, and reports have suggested that Ruben Amorim’s presence at Old Trafford may hand Manchester United an advantage in the battle for his signature. The struggling Premier League giants have intensified their efforts to sign the 26-year-old Dane, submitting a bid worth €40 million to secure his services.
While Hjulmand has a release clause worth €80 million in his contract with Sporting CP, the Portuguese champions are ready to cash in on him for €50 million. The price tag is too high for Juventus, but it will be interesting to see if Manchester United will submit a higher offer and meet Sporting’s valuation of €50 million.
