Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Southampton shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale.
Newcastle United have been on the lookout for a new goalkeeper throughout the summer, and according to Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are closing in on the signing of Aaron Ramsdale. They have received a significant boost as the player is keen on making the switch and has already given the green light to the move.
Ramsdale was one of the mainstays at Arsenal a few seasons back, but the arrival of David Raya resulted in him going down the pecking order. After struggling for regular minutes in North London, he ended up joining Southampton last summer.
The move to the Saints didn’t really work out as he failed to help them survive in the top flight. The 27-year-old was involved in a total of 32 matches, and he ended up conceding 68 goals with just four clean sheets.
Despite a poor 2024/25 campaign, Ramsdale is still quite highly rated by top clubs given his track record at Arsenal. While his contract at Southampton runs until 2028, his departure is almost certain as he doesn’t want to compete in the second division.
Newcastle are on the verge of signing Ramsdale
Newcastle have emerged as a potential destination for the English shot-stopper. While Eddie Howe does have Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in his ranks, the duo’s contract runs out in 12 months, and they are not going to get any younger.
As a result, the Magpies boss wants to bring in a goalkeeper who can not only compete with them for a place in the XI but also be their undisputed number one in the near future. They consider Ramsdale an ideal fit for the role and have been working hard to secure his services.
The former Arsenal goalkeeper has already said yes to the move, which is a massive boost for Newcastle. They have already sent an official offer to the Saints and are hoping to wrap it up quickly.
The Tyneside club are looking to secure his services on loan with a buy option. They are willing to pay a big loan fee and are ready to cover his entire wages. While the Saints are ready to accept a temporary move, they want a higher fee. However, the deal is still expected to go through.
