Liverpool are still very much interested in a move for Alexander Isak after the Newcastle United striker pulled out of the pre-season tour and handed in a transfer request.
According to Sebastian Vidal, Liverpool very much maintains their big interest in star striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish attacker has stirred up controversy over at Newcastle United after pulling out of their pre-season tour of Asia and then handing in a transfer request.
Alexander Isak is currently the biggest story of this transfer market, as there were plenty of twists and turns in the striker’s saga. The Swede was kept out of Newcastle United’s pre-season friendly with Celtic a few days ago, as Eddie Howe commented later that it was due to speculation surrounding the player.
While that comment went under the radar, the truth wasn’t far away, as earlier on Thursday speculation surrounding the striker mounted to new levels. Initial reports stated Isak was not part of the pre-season tour due to a thigh injury, but later in the day, he handed in a transfer request.
The reasons for it, as well as the timing of the transfer request, remain unclear at this stage, but it’s clear that the Swede wants a new challenge. Liverpool had already tested the waters with a serious enquiry before they went on to sign Hugo Ekitike only a few days ago.
Despite the arrival of the French striker, it appears Liverpool are still very much interested in Isak. They do have space in their squad following the demise of Diogo Jota and the expected departure of Darwin Nunez. Arne Slot could potentially have the 25-year-old Swede and Ekitike as his first-choice strikers in the new season.
Liverpool can sign Alexander Isak
Liverpool were expected to move for Isak if the striker pushed for an exit, and that has become a reality following the events on Thursday. The striker missing the pre-season tour was a big enough hint as it is, and the transfer request only confirmed fears of his desire to move away.
Isak reportedly prefers Liverpool over other suitors, although the likes of Arsenal or Chelsea are not expected to join the race at this stage of the window. Hence, any potential move to Liverpool will depend on whether Newcastle United are ready to concede, as the Reds are certainly willing to pay a huge fee to land the 25-year-old Swede.
