Tottenham optimistic about landing Kobbie Mainoo

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 20-year-old English international Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, Kobbie Mainoo is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 20-year-old Manchester United whizkid has emerged as a target for the North London outfit.

The 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners have already submitted an enquiry to discuss a summer move for Mainoo. With the Englishman’s contract talks with Manchester United stalling, the confidence is growing in the Tottenham camp. The youngster is keen on securing regular game time in the 2025/26 season as he looks to seal a spot in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kobbie Mainoo and his rise

Kobbie Mainoo has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the world since breaking into the first-team squad at Manchester United. The English international established a foothold at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, enjoying his breakthrough when the Dutch tactician was in charge of the Premier League club.

The 20-year-old was a mainstay in the middle of the park for Manchester United until the 2023/24 season but was in and out of the starting lineup last term due to fitness issues. Mainoo has turned out 72 times thus far for Manchester United while chipping in with seven goals and two assists. However, the lack of regular game time has left his future in a spot of bother, with the situation capturing the attention of Tottenham Hotspur.

London calling?

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Kobbie Mainoo is understandable. The Lilywhites are scouring the market for a midfielder this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Yves Bissouma’s long-term future. In addition, Mainoo can be a better solution in the middle of the park for Tottenham than Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur.

The 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners have already submitted an enquiry over a possible summer move, and they are increasingly confident of securing his services. While Manchester United will aim to tie the 20-year-old Englishman to a new contract, the discussions have not progressed as well as the Red Devils would have liked.

That is part of the reason why confidence and optimism have grown in the Tottenham camp. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can complete a shock move to sign the English international from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
