Aston Villa will not launch the offensive to re-sign 27-year-old Brazilian international Douglas Luiz from Serie A club Juventus in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Sun, Douglas Luiz has been the subject of interest from Aston Villa. Everton and West Ham United are also keen on signing the out-of-favour Juventus midfielder in the summer transfer window. The two clubs now have a clearer run at the Brazilian international, with Aston Villa deciding against launching the offensive for a summer move.
Douglas Luiz and his Juventus woes
Douglas Luiz has been a pale shadow of the domineering midfielder he was at Aston Villa, having been dreadful since joining Juventus in a deal worth £42.5 million last summer. The 27-year-old midfielder has barely featured for the Bianconeri, with poor form and fitness issues hampering him in the 2024/25 season.
The Brazilian international has not even managed 1,000 minutes of game time across 27 outings thus far for Juventus. However, Luiz’s stock in the market remains high, and a return to the Premier League may be on the cards. Aston Villa, Everton, and West Ham United have been among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
A man in demand
Recent reports have suggested that Aston Villa may look to re-sign Luiz on loan from Juventus in the summer transfer window. However, the interest was not understandable, considering Unai Emery has a stacked midfield unit. So, it makes sense that the Villans have decided not to pursue their former talismanic midfielder’s signature.
Meanwhile, Everton’s interest in Douglas Luiz makes sense. Abdoulaye Doucoure has left the Merseyside club as a free agent, while Idrissa Gueye is in the twilight of his career. So, Everton can do with a dynamic midfielder in the summer transfer window, with the Juventus flop emerging as a viable target.
As for West Ham, Carlos Soler and Guido Rodriguez were underwhelming in the 2024/25 season, and the former has returned to Paris Saint-Germain after the loan spell ended. In addition, James Ward-Prowse and Tomas Soucek face an uncertain future at the London Stadium. Luiz is thus an option worth considering for West Ham.
While Juventus would prefer a permanent departure, they are open to a loan deal. It will be interesting to see if Everton and West Ham further their interest by submitting bids to sign the 27-year-old Brazilian international after Aston Villa decided to abandon the chase.
