According to a report by TEAMtalk, Ollie Watkins is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window. So, the 29-year-old Aston Villa centre-forward has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.
However, the Englishman will not come cheap, with the West Midlands outfit demanding around £90 million to part ways with him in the summer transfer window. Aston Villa will hope not to part ways with Watkins, so they have slapped a high price tag on him amid his links with Newcastle United.
Ollie Watkins and his exploits for Aston Villa
Ollie Watkins has established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League since joining Aston Villa from Brentford in September 2020. The 29-year-old did not take long to make his mark at the West Midlands club, and he has gone from strength to strength in the last half a decade.
The English international has turned out over 200 times thus far for Aston Villa while chipping in with 87 goals and 42 assists. Meanwhile, Watkins has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe with his exploits for his club and country. Newcastle United will be one of the prospective suitors vying for his signature vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Newcastle United’s interest in Ollie Watkins is understandable. The Magpies are scouring the market for a versatile striker this summer after parting ways with Callum Wilson as a free agent. In addition, Alexander Isak’s long-term future at St. James’ Park is uncertain amid his constant links with Premier League bigwigs, including Liverpool.
So, several candidates, including Hugo Ekitike, have emerged on Newcastle United’s radar, with Watkins also a viable target. While the 29-year-old Englishman will be a short-term solution for the Tyneside outfit, he will not take long to land on his feet at St. James’ Park. However, Aston Villa will demand a premium to part ways with him.
The Villans want around £90 million in the hope of thwarting the English striker’s suitors, as they wish to keep him at the club beyond the summer transfer window. So, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle United will break the bank and fork out £90 million to sign Watkins from Aston Villa.
